A Boat Waiting...

Luke 5:1-10

So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee), and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.

When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.

So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

Tired, yet rested.
Drained, yet filled.
Exhausted, yet refreshed.

Once again the crowd presses in. He feels the intense force squeezing from every direction. The weight is almost too much for Jesus to bear... both physically and spiritually. Beads of sweat emerge on His forehead. In a matter of minutes His tunic is drenched. A chill electrifies a lightening bolt igniting a shiver throughout His body.

Fully human, yet entirely God.

He prays in silence as He skirts along the shore, "Father, I'm not made to do this alone. I need help... Your help. Is it time to call in the troops - my disciples? I long to spend time with the ones you have chosen to be by my side. Please open the door for this team to come together soon! I trust your timing, but I really am exhausted. Father you know I have wrestled with Satan's temptations in the wilderness, experienced rejection in my own hometown of Nazareth, faced demon-possessed men, healed the sick, and made the blind see. I am lonely and long for true friends to join me in this journey. Please help me know when the time is right to call our appointed men. I trust you."

As the crowd thickens He spots two boats. At that moment He realizes His Father answered His prayer by providing a place of refuge. Stepping into the first boat, Jesus lets out a quiet sigh of relief. Turning to Simon, the owner, Jesus says, "Thank you for providing me a place to rest. Do you mind pulling away from the shore so I can speak to the crowd from in here?" With an odd look on his face, Simon grants the request. Jesus, knowing Simon's heart, smiles and begins speaking to the crowd.

In amazement thoughts plunge through Simon's mind like, Who is this man of wonder? I've never heard the Torah taught with such authority and passion. Then as if out of no where, Jesus turns to Simon and gently commands him to take the boat further out into the deep. Is He kidding? I fished all night and didn't catch a thing. The fish just aren't biting today. Almost as if Jesus perceived Simon's thoughts, He added, "Oh and by the way, when we get there I want you to throw the net into the deep." Simon glanced at the throng of people staring at the boat. He pauses as He faces this choice, one that could change the course of his life forever. A mind debate erupts, Do I follow this man of wonder or do I worry that the people will think I have gone crazy. It is obvious we didn't catch fish last night. Never the less I will obey!

One by one the throng of people begin screaming and shouting, "Look at Simon! His net is overflowing with fish. Both boats are filled to the brim. This is unbelievable!" Upon reaching the shore, Simon and his fishing partners leave all their possessions, including the largest catch of their lifetime, and follow this Man of Wonder... Jesus... Master... Savior!

All in God's timing. Jesus' prayer. Answered with A Boat Waiting.

Challenge for the Week... Does God have a boat waiting for you? Is Jesus asking to go with you along the shores of life? Possibly He is directing you to a deeper place? Are you afraid? Where are your eyes focused... on Jesus or others? Resist saying "No" Him. Think of what Simon would have missed if He'd focused on others!

The Heavens Declare His Glory...

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.

Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.

There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.

Their line has gone out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world.

Psalm 19:1-4

Approaching His destination brings a sigh of relief. Rest is near. The aroma drifting off the Sea of Galilee rejuvenates His soul. Peace and quiet call to Jesus, if even for a moment. His weary body feels the effects of traveling for miles. Looking down at His feet, He notices His swollen ankles. All of a sudden, He sees the source of the sharp pain in his feet. The bulging blisters seem to awaken every nerve in His body. He seeks a solitary spot rest. Finding a place for the night brings relief. Using a rock for a pillow, Jesus is lulled by the sound of the water hitting the shoreline. He begins praying, Father, I need some time alone with you! Time to be refreshed. The throng of people are draining my physical, mental and spiritual life. I am tired and my spirit needs replenishing. Closing his eyes, Jesus experiences a sweet union with His Father.

Jesus awakes the next morning while it's still dark. He craves quiet time with His Father. The Sea of Galilee brings Him comfort. Strolling along the shore memories roll in like ripples from the sea. A smile appears as he recalls meeting His first disciples in this very place. Encouragement overwhelms Him.

The crisp breeze gently blows through His cloak. Jesus scans the scenery and notices the sun barely peeking over the mountains casting a reflection on the water. A picturesque moment to behold. Immediately, He recalls His prayer from the night before. He knows His Father is reminding Him of their time together creating the universe. God begins speaking,

Good Morning my son! I miss you. You will be with me soon sitting at my right hand. You are doing a wonderful job. Keep it up! I can't wait for you to return home. But first you have work to accomplish. Continue to listen to me every minute and I will give you the words to speak. I love you!

With hands raised and tears flowing Jesus quotes Psalm 19:5-6,

In the heavens He has set a tabernacle for the sun,

which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,

and rejoices like a strong man to run its race.

Its rising is from one end of heaven,

and its circuit to the other end;

And there is nothing hidden from its heat.

A hush comes over the sea. In that moment He experiences a tender touch. An answered prayer. A refreshment without words!

Are you in need of replenishing your walk with the Lord? Are you tired, worn out and weary? Ask God for refreshment. Recognize the times throughout your day He is giving you a touch of encouragement. And remember... The heavens declare the glory of the Lord!

Blessed for Standing!

What do you notice in this picture... a boat, the turbulent waters, the scenery, the colors? Look again. Search for the message.

"I will bless those who bless you, (Israel) and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of he earth shall be blessed." Gen 12:3

Now do you see the heart of God in this photo? The two flags flying together with a cross between them? Two nations beckoning a message for all to see: America's support for Israel. This is beyond a political bulletin to the world, it is a spiritual call. God promises to bless the man or nation that blesses His Chosen People. History proves beyond reasonable doubt that the nations who have blessed the Jewish people have been blessed by God. And, the nations who've cursed the Jewish people have experienced the curse of God... economically, spiritually, moral decay, His protection lifted, natural disasters, and more.

We, the United States of America, must continue to support the nation of Israel. Join me in praying for the nation of Israel! Pray that our political men and women will understand the importance of girding this nation in every way.

"Thank you, Lord, that we as a nation support the country of Israel. I ask that we continue to stand behind them. Lord, hem Israel in from behind and in front. Thank you for the opportunity to be grafted into your Kingdom."

The Religious Leaders Seek a Sign...

Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, "When it is evening you say, '[It will be] fair weather, for the sky is red'; "and in the morning, '[It will be] foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot [discern] the signs of the times. "A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." And He left them and departed. Matt 16:1-4

Skirting His way around the Sea of Galilee, Jesus needs spiritual, mental and physical refueling. He is exhausted from the past three days of healing the sick, blind, lame, multitudes of miracles and feeding the four thousand. After sending the crowd away He takes a deep breath. He can’t wait to be alone with His Father in prayer. But, in a moment’s notice the high and mighty spiritual leaders approach Him. Knowing their motives before a word is spoken, Jesus listens. Their haughty smiles tell it all as they test Him and prod for answers. Imagine Jesus looking into the heavens and seeing the fierceness of red sky. Using this real life analogy, He goes on to share His wisdom – wisdom they neither recognize nor desire to acknowledge. As Jesus turns to walk away, His heavy heart beats faster… He knows His Hour is coming soon!

Are you seeking a sign? Something other than Jesus Himself? In Him is everything. He is all we need. This is so exciting... the more we seek Him, the more we find Him. Don't look for outward signs or things of this world to bring you comfort. Look to Jesus! He is the answer to everything!

I had the privilege to tour Israel in November 2011. What a gift and a blessing. Not only for me, but also for Reflective Life Ministries. So many have asked me to share my experience. This seems to be the best way... through my pictures. Join me on this Israel Blog Tour as we go through the different regions and connect a picture to the scriptures. My prayer is the Word of God will come alive for you as it has for me!

Four Fishermen Called...

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Matt 4:18-20

Imagine Jesus walking by the Sea of Galilee. He's just returned from His 40 days in the wilderness where he was tempted by Satan. Looking over this body of water brings warmth to His soul and refreshment to His spirit. Meandering along the shore Jesus relishes the sights, sounds and aroma of His Father's creation. Jesus recalls His excitement when the foundations of the earth were formed. A smile appears as He remembers the firework display in the sky as the stars came into existence. All of a sudden, He notices a fish gently gliding through the water. A song of praise springs forth! Then a twinge of loneliness envelopes His heart and soul. He realizes He misses home. Not His earthly home, but His place in heaven with His Father. In the moment of heartache, His eyes gaze upon His purpose for walking by the Sea of Galilee - two fishermen. A tear breaks through while watching these brothers hard at work. Immediately, Jesus' loneliness disappears in a vapor. Excitement is written all over His face as He approaches these fishermen... His new friends... His first disciples!

This picture was taken looking onto the Sea of Galilee at Capernuam. Soak in every moment. Listen to the voice of the Lord calling you to serve Him. Are you ready and willing to follow with no questions asked?

The Israel Tour: Sea of Galilee

Journey with me on this trek as I share with you my Israel Tour! We begin with the Sea of Galilee!

"Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid." Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going." John 6:15-21

Jesus walks on the Sea of Galilee... Breath-taking. Speechless. Amazed!

This picture was taken at Kfar Nahum or Capernaum looking out at the Sea of Galilee. Immediately, when seeing this cross on the gate I thought of Jesus walking on the water. This thought poured in...

Image strolling by the Sea of Galilee. You notice a boat coming near the shoreline. All of a sudden, you see a man walking on water toward the boat. What thoughts plunge into your mind? How would you respond as an observer viewing from the seashore? Would you scream out to the boat, "Watch Out?" Would you turn your head and look the other way? Or, would you take the time to pray for them?

Today's Challenge: Do you see Jesus coming toward someones "boat?" Does it seem like He is approaching them in a different way than He approached you? Are you trying to help them experience Jesus only from your point of view? Jesus is creative and individual in the way He reaches each one of us. When God allows us a shoreline view, take the opportunity to PRAY! May the Lord bless you through this picture!

Thankful Attitude... Live for Him!

"Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting and His Truth endures to all generations." Psalm 100:5

Straighten up your attitude, right now!

You need to be thankful for what you have!

Please have a thankful heart!

Do these statements ring a bell? Do you recall these words flowing from your mother's mouth? I smile just thinking about my mom's wisdom. As a child, when I displayed an ungrateful attitude she had the ability to speak through her eyes. You know what I mean? My sisters and I called it, "The Look!" We knew it was in our best interest to immediately straighten up! It's amazing how "The Look" passed from mom to her daughters. Now as a mom, I find myself using these same facial expressions with my children. And... it works!

An ungrateful attitude affects not only the person, but others. What does it mean to have a A Thankful Heart. Why not a Thankful Mouth? Or a Thankful Face?

Think about it... when someone is appreciative her words uplift, encourage and inspire others. They are evidence of a selfless and humble life. "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness - James 3:9,10. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing." In other words, in the same breath we can be singing praises to God while driving in the car and then scream at a driver in front of us. I have experienced this more than once! My children can testify. What sets our mouth into motion?

Why don't we focus on a Thankful Face? I have to say I used to be one who lived behind a mask. Every morning I painted on a smile. But, underneath was a women in the darkness of life. Oh, I was a Christian who fell into thinking Believers couldn't be depressed and must exhibit joy at all times! Little did I know my daily mask was slowly cracking into pieces. It worked well for a few years, but as time passed the realness surfaced. Why does a mask only work for a little while? What sets our face into motion?

As in water face reflects face, so a man's heart reveals the man. Proverbs 27:19 (NKJV)

The Lord doesn't look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

Oh my, this is the answer! We are looking on the outside while God is focused on the inside. Our character is created within the heart of man. The more we love Jesus, the more we reflect Him in our conversations and our actions. As we seek His face, we become His reflection! It all begins in the heart... A Thankful Attitude reflects a Thankful Heart which affects a the face and the mouth!

Thankful Expressions and Pleasant Words!

Challenge for the Week... This Thanksgiving as you sit at the table don't focus on the delicious food, but on the love poured into preparing the feast. Appreciate those who spent hours shopping and creating the family meal. A Thankful Attitude... loves, serves, encourages, lends a hand (at the cleanup-hint, hint), and is grateful in all circumstances. In fact, write out Psalm 100:5 and use this for your Thanksgiving verse. This is a great focus verse for the Thanksgiving season! Live a life sold out to Jesus with a Thankful Attitude that says... Life is not about me, but all about Him! Amen!

Wisdom Calls... Live for Him!

Question...

Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech: How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? Prov 1:20-22

Answer...

If you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Prov 2:1-5

Read Prov 1:20-2:5

Amazement encompasses my soul. Warmth fills my heart. Everything we need is in the Word of God! All the answers to life are waiting for us to behold. Why don't we take more time to read God's Word? Why do we act first and then seek God for His answers?

Wisdom Calls...

She raises her head.

She cries out.

She makes her speech.

Listen to my counsel.

I've called you so often.

But you wouldn't come.

I reached out to you.

But you paid no attention.

You ignored my advice.

Rejected the correction I offered.

Wisdom Asks... How long will you be simpleminded? How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?

Wisdom Calls...

Listen to what I say.

Treasure my commands.

Tune your ears to wisdom.

Concentrate on understanding.

Cry out for insight.

Ask for understanding.

Search for them like silver.

Seek them like hidden treasures.

Then, you will understand

The fear of the Lord.

And gain the knowledge of God.

All of life's answers written thousands of years ago. Waiting for us to discover. God desires to pour out His wisdom. But waits for us to seek Him. He never pushes Himself on us.

Armed... Live for Him!

Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for He who suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. -1 Peter 4:1-2

Live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want." -Galatians 5:16-17

Keep Off the Grass...

Do Not Enter...

Do Not Disturb...

Keep Out!

What is it about human nature? Why do we desire what we don't possess? Do you despise those inward nudges to do the opposite of what you know you should do? Being prepared by arming yourself with the mind of Christ is the answer to not giving into these fleshly desires. Let me share a scenario...

You're late for a job interview. After securing the perfect parking spot you realize the entrance to the building is right in front of you. But a section of grass lies between you and the doorway, and a sign reads "Keep Off the Grass!" You notice the sidewalk meanders its way around the pristine grassy garden area before ending at the door you want to go through. You think to yourself... I'm in a hurry. I need to go straight to the door! You quickly scan the scene, and with no one in sight you say to yourself... Oh well, no one will care. A little voice inside is telling you not to disobey, but you justify your actions and tip-toe through the plot of grass. Relieved to save some time, you enter the building and sit down in the waiting area. Within seconds the interviewer calls you into his office. When he casually mentions seeing you in the parking lot, your face goes pale! You are inwardly kicking yourself for not listening to that still small voice.

This is no different from Adam and Eve in Genesis 3. God gave them freedom to eat from any tree in the garden except one... the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Gen. 2:17). Picture a sign on this tree that read "Keep Off!" Well, as we know, Adam watched his wife Eve give in to Satan's temptation, she ate from the tree, and sin entered the world immediately! If only she had obeyed the sign!

We are still the same today. A toddler will specifically be told not to touch the stove, but touches it anyway. Hopefully the remembrance of his pain causes him to listen to the warning voice next time. Humans have this sin nature that desires what they shouldn't obtain. It is when we live by the Spirit that we will not want to gratify the sinful nature. The way to successfully accomplish this is to keep armed with the mind of Christ! Prayer is one of the major components to readiness. Prayer keeps you in continual communication with Jesus. The more we are in tune with Christ, the more we stay aware of the Holy Spirit's direction for our daily lives. This arms us with the mind of Christ.

Challenge for the Week... Being Armed with the Mind of Christ helps us avoid making unwise decisions. Remember God knows what is best for us, but He doesn't make us obey. That is our choice. I can't help but think that when we prepare our hearts and arm ourselves with the mind of Christ, God smiles, claps His hands, and shouts "Yes, she did it!"

The Just for the Unjust... Live for Him!

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit... through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.

- 1 Peter 3:18;22

The Just for the Unjust.

Read 1 Peter 3:18-32

What is the true meaning to this statement? In today's world we hear phrases like... Give him what he deserves! She made the bed she lies in! Serves him right! Am I confused? The passage above doesn't seem to follow these concepts. In fact, it is the total opposite.

The Greek meaning for just/unjust lead us in a different direction from the definitions above....

Just = righteous, observing divine laws, upright, virtuous, keeping the commands of God, innocent, faultless, guiltless, approved
Unjust = descriptive of one who violates or has violated justice, unjust, unrighteous, sinful, of one who deals fraudulently with others, deceitful

According to these true meanings we could change the phrase The Just for the Unjust to...

The Righteous for the Unrighteous
The Not Guilty for the Guilty
The Approved for the Unapproved

Take a few moments to observe the picture above. Notice the gap that once separated man from God. Man tried to build an overpass with good works and obedience, but over and over failed.

Why... Because only God could bridge the great divide.

How... By sending His Son, Jesus, as our kinsman redeemer.

Fully human Jesus lived, loved, breathed, forgave, suffered, died, and now lives at the right hand of His Father, our Father. Looking again at the picture, we see that without The Cross there is a gaping hole, an open canyon leading straight to the pit of darkness. The Just for the Unjust died and rose again, making this crosswalk possible.

Last weekend my husband and I went to see the movie Courageous. Wow, an awesome, amazing movie that everyone needs to see! (Oh, don't forget to bring tissues!) Take a few minutes to watch this scene. As you view it remember 1 Peter 3:18-22.

In this scene from Courageous, officers Nathan and David talk about dealing with guilt. Nathan alerts his friend that in God's eyes we are guilty, but in Christ, we find redemption.

It is so exciting to know that once we accept the gift of Jesus' salvation, The Cross bridge will never be removed! Sadly, many times we forget that Jesus, The Just, covered the sins of The Unjust: Past, Present, Future! Often we live in the guilt of the past, not accepting His total forgiveness. Don't let the past hold you back from all God has for you. Let your story be used for His glory!

See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. (NKJV)

Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.(NIV)

A fifty-year drought, scorching heat, gusting winds, and parched trees create the perfect recipe for disaster!

Monday, September 5, 2011 started like any other Labor Day... sleeping late, no school, and a big family breakfast. Little did we know, lurking in a wooded area of our community a tiny ember emerged. Within seconds it ignited into a sea of flames. In the blink of an eye fire fighters were on the scene utilizing their skills and talents. Surrounding neighborhoods had about ten minutes to evacuate. Blockades diverted traffic to safe routes. People from all over banded together to help evacuees and fire fighters with food, supplies, water and more. What took years and years to produce was consumed within minutes!

My heart aches for those affected by this tragedy. Questions bombard my mind. The "why's" continue to pour in like a rushing river. It doesn't make sense. Turning to the Word, God opened my eyes to a new and fresh understanding.

Just as a small spark can set a forest into blazes; the tongue has the power to kindle a fire. One word can either set a conversation into destructive flames or extinguish it on the spot.

This week I had the opportunity to practice this concept. I accidentally picked the wrong grocery line. I didn't realize it was a "15 Item's Only" lane. After unloading my 40-50 items on the counter the cashier gently shared guidelines. I offered to put the groceries back in the basket and go to another lane. With disgust he rolled his eyes and said come on through. By this time a woman filed in behind me. She started saying, "I can't believe this! Don't you know you have too many items. Who do you think you are?" Now my stomach made its way to my throat as I tenderly said, "I am so sorry, I didn't realize this was a quick checkout lane." She continued to bad mouth me. I persisted in my apologizes, but she didn't seem to listen. My flesh stirred and the Holy Spirit held back the words trying to exit my mouth. All of a sudden, this thought entered, "Respond with kindness." So, I looked into her eyes and said, "Thank you so much for extending grace to me when I don't deserve it." A look of amazement adorned her face. What would have ignited a flame into action was chocked out by a calm response...

Challenge for the Week... Do you find yourself Fighting Fires or practicing fire prevention? God gives us opportunities to put into action His biblical principals all the time. This week ask the Lord to help you think before you speak. Allow everything that comes out of your mouth to be filtered through Jesus. Be aware of the areas you need to surrender to the Lord! Remember, one word can either set a conversation into destructive flames or extinguish it on the spot.

Our prayers and appreciation go out to the Firefighters across the United States who have volunteered their time to halt these devastating Texas fires. We continue to pray for rain!

Are You Ready? Yes... Live for Him!

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. 'Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.' But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 1 Peter 3:13-17

Are you ready? What are you ready for... work, shopping, vacation, dinner or your everyday activities? Possibly you are anticipating a move, the birth of a child, the death of a loved one, the empty nest, or just a change in the weather. Life is constantly changing. Planning is a vital part of the process.

But, are you really ready... ready for the daily opportunities God gives to share the message of Christ? Are you prepared to love and serve Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, even when you don't feel like it? When someone recognizes your joy in the midst of a difficult situation, do you glorify Jesus with your answer? Asking God to prepare you is important to living every moment sold out to Jesus.

I love this verse... But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. (1 Peter 3:15) A believer's answer to the question, "Are you ready?" should always be like this picture... YES! We are living, breathing testimonies of a new creation in Jesus. Reflecting Him to the world around us should be our hearts desire. Recognizing it is not about us, but all about Him changes us and in turn affects others around us.

So, how do we live out this verse in our daily lives? Here are three suggestions:

Pray... Prayer keeps us intimately connected to the Lord. It keeps our hearts tuned to Him. Learning to live in constant communication with God readies us for what lies ahead.
Observe... We need to open our eyes to the God-incidences throughout the day... those moments where God gives us the opportunity to share the truth and message of Jesus to others.
Act... Let's get going! After constant prayer and recognition of an opportunity, when God opens the door, step though to share the realness of Jesus with others.

Challenge for the Week... Ask the Lord to prepare you every day. Look for the opportunities He brings your way. Then with excitement put into action what He wants you to share with others. It is so much fun serving the Lord! Are you ready? Yes! Let's Go!

Back to School ... Pray!

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

Deuteronomy 6:5,7

Excitement’s in the air! Anticipation rises. It’s that time of year when the kids go back to school.

Who can forget watching your child go to "big school" for the first time? I remember those bittersweet moments as each of my four children kissed me good-bye. I always knew that day would arrive, but nothing prepared me for the moment.

Elementary school seemed to fly by and almost overnight they were in junior high and then high school. And in a blink of an eye, they were off to college. Where did the years go?

I learned early on that when my children were away from home, praying for them comforted me. By turning them over to God I experienced a calm peace. Year after year my prayers intensified, yet remained the same…

· Elementary School – Will he make a friend? Will he eat all his lunch, or just the cookies and chips? God help him to love You with all his heart.

· Junior/Senior High –Will he make the right friends? Is he paying attention to the teacher? God, help him love You with all his soul.

· College - Will he make some forever friends? Is he making the right life decisions? God, help him to love You with all his strength.

Just as our children face challenges, we as moms face our own set of challenges…

· To pray over our children no matter where they are in life.

· To be on our knees for those God entrusted to us.

· To ultimately pray for each child to love Jesus with all his heart, soul, and mind!

· Finally, to let them know we are praying for them each day! What a blessing it is to pray for our children.

I ask you to take advantage of this new season too. Do you need a fresh start? Where are you in your relationship with God? In my Bible study, Reflecting Him – Living for Jesus and Loving It, I encourage you to find Jesus in your everyday activities. He is there for us 24 hours a day, and He wants to hear our everyday prayers!

In Harmony... Live for Him!

I love this picture! Can you learn anything this little girl?

Read: 1 Peter 3:8-12...

All of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do no repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

In the quiet of your heart can you hear the orchestra? The variety of instruments played in unison can lull a crying baby to sleep or bring calmness in the midst of a storm. Many times when played alone the instruments almost sound out of tune or off key. But, when blended together they make a beautiful noise. Each one complimenting the other. The music inspires, soothes, and even mesmerizes the listener.

It In the verse above the Greek word for harmony is homophron which means "one mind, one passion." This is actually a combination of two words meaning to "rush along" and "in unison." Like with music... a number of notes played at the same time are different, but harmonize in pitch and tone. Captivating an audience from the moment the first note is played.

This is a picture of the body of Christ when we are of one mind. As instruments of a famous orchestra directed by a concert master, so the Holy Spirit blends together the prayers of the saints. God desires for His children to pray together so they make beautiful music through their prayers. I love that 1 Peter 3:12 says, For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their prayer. As the leader of the first church in Acts, Peter grasped the importance of coming together to lift praises and requests to the Lord. We should live out their example in our own lives.

Why do we make corporate prayer a last resort? Over and over God's Word shows us examples of believers praying together and God answering. God calls us to pray! This is exciting... God gives us an opportunity to participate in eternity with Him through prayer.

Let's do it! Let's pray together! Don't miss the blessing of drawing nearer to God and other brothers and sisters in Christ as you create beautiful "prayer" songs together.

Challenge for the Week... Take another look at this picture. How does it impact your life? Hmm, there is a lot we can learn from this little girl! Ask the Lord to show you a group of believer's to pray with this week. If you are afraid to step out in this way ask God for courage. If you are in need of prayer for a situation, ask the Lord to lead you to someone or a group of prayer warriors. Oh, the harmonious melodies of the saints coming together is a blessing to the soul!

We are taking a break this week from our study in 1 Peter and interviewing a dear friend and mentor of mine, novelist Janice Hanna Thompson. Her heart for encouraging writers is evident through her online writing courses, keynotes and conferences. I hope you enjoy today's interview Janice and learning about her newest novel release Love Finds You in Groom, Texas.

Janice Hanna (also published as Janice Thompson) has published more than seventy novels and non-fiction books. She has also published more than fifty magazine articles and several musical comedies for the stage. Janice makes her home in the Houston area near her children and grandchildren.

Let's chat with novelist Janice Hanna Thompson, author of Love Finds You in Groom, Texas (Summerside/Guideposts, June 2011).

Please tell us about the plot of Love Finds You in Groom, Texas.

Always the groomsman, never the groom… It’s 1914, and Jake O’Farrell has gained an unusual reputation among the locals: He’s played the roles of groomsman and best man in all four of his older brothers’ weddings, but he’s never been able to find the woman to capture his heart. And now with the upcoming wedding of his best friend, Jake will become the last single man in the town of Groom.

Anne Denning has made the difficult decision to move with her sisters to Texas, but a train derailment forces them to seek shelter in Groom, near Amarillo. Mrs. O’Farrell, hopeful that Anne will catch her youngest son’s eye, invites the girls to stay at her home until the train is repaired and ready to pull out. Anne has no idea of the blissful chaos that lies ahead!

Tell us something interesting about the town of Groom:

Groom boasts a nineteen-story high cross. More than 100 welders worked together to erect it in 1995. Now you can see why I toyed with the idea of writing a contemporary novel! I wanted to include the cross. Because I went with historical, I decided to give the heroine a small cross necklace to wear, one that symbolizes her faith (and alludes to the “bigger” cross to come).

Why will readers enjoy your novel?

In spite of the lead character’s tough situation, the story is filled with comedic elements. Anne’s two younger sisters are a hoot. So is Maggie (the hero’s mother). She’s an Irish spitfire! I think readers will appreciate the romance between Anne and Jake. It’s filled with all sorts of sweet and comic moments.

What are readers saying about this book? Have you had any feedback so far?

So far the book has all five-star reviews on amazon (which makes me smile, of course). Here’s a review I found that really got me excited:

This delightful tale of romance which emerges out of tragic circumstances is set in a wonderful town called Groom in the panhandle of the great state of Texas. It is a story of tragedy, love, and God's divine hand of providence that enters a situation just at the right time and changes everything. Young Anne finds herself on a train heading to Dallas with her two younger sisters after the loss of their father. When fate intervenes, the trail derails and their future is forever altered. And then there is Jake, the last available young man in Groom who finds himself to be the recipient of many jokes about his situation, especially from his brothers. Jake's mother, Maggie, embodies everything wonderful that Anne remembers about her own mother before she died. Throw in the mixture of the antics of Aunt Bets and the perceived sternness of Uncle Bertrand, and you have a story of new revelations and delightful outcomes.

How absolutely wonderful, in this day and age when problems seem to loom on every side and people have lost faith and hope, to read a story that is all about faith and hope. It is refreshing to read a story set in an era when one's words meant something, when prayer was the first course of action, when faith ruled our very existence, when people looked out for one another even during hard times. The "S" Word: Submission... Live for Him!

Read 1 Peter 3:1-7

Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the Word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives...

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life...
So that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Submissive... Surrender.... Subjection...

What thoughts arise when you read these words? Maybe words like doormat, bondage or controlled pop into your mind. Possibly your reaction stems from the world's ideas... "No one's going to tell me what to do. I am my own person. I can make my own choices." But what does God really mean when He uses the word submissive?

Considerate... Thoughtful.... Tactful...

How do you compare this group of words to the previous list? In a more positive way? If so, why? What makes this list different from the first group? Isn’t it because of the way we commonly use these words in today’s culture? What did God mean by considerate?"

When studying the Bible, it is so important to grasp the true meaning of God’s words. We need to understand the Greek and Hebrew definitions of His words as well as the answers to who, what and why they were written. So, let's do a little investigating. You might change your ideas about the meanings of the words in today’s verses. This is actually fun! Look at scripture excavation as a way to find the keys to unlocking mysteries within God's Word.

Let's first look at 1 Peter 3: 1-6. The main focus is wives being submissive to their husbands. I used www.blueletterbible.com to look up the original meanings of some words. (If you have a smart phone you can download the app for this website.) The word used for submission in the KJV is subjection, which means to arrange under, to subordinate, to subject, put in subjection, to subject one's self, obey, to yield to one's admonition or advice. Nowhere in this definition does it say anything about the wife being a doormat or being controlled by her husband.

This word was a Greek military term meaning "to arrange [troop divisions] in a military fashion under the command of a leader". In non-military use, it was "a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, and carrying a burden". We just uncovered one of the keys to unlocking the submission links. As Christians we should all surrender or submit our lives to Jesus. God then directs the wife to yield to her husband’s advice and be under his authority.

BUT, I love that Peter doesn't stop with the wife's actions. He ends with the husband's responsibilities. The husband is to be considerate and treat her with respect. Again, digging into the true meaning of the word considerate we find another hidden key. The KJV says, "Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with [them] according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered." This is very important... Knowledge means a deeper more perfect and enlarged knowledge of the Christian religion. Honor means to value and/or respect. So as the husband dwells or lives with his wife he is called to spiritually lead his wife to a deeper walk with Jesus and to respect her.

Go back and read today’s scripture again. Notice that the verses about wives, and the verses about husbands both contain the phrase "in the same be...", which translates to "in the same way" or "likewise." In other words, both are required to participate equally in the marriage covenant. It truly is a full circle process. The wife submits. The husband spiritually leads with respect... So that your prayers are not hindered. (end of 1 Peter 3:7)

This is exciting! God loves us enough to give us marriage guidelines. By focusing on God's ways and not the world’s ideas, we understand our part in God's plan for marriage. God blesses those who submit to His instructions and lead their families to a deeper understanding of God's Word.

It's Not Fair... Live for Him!

Read 1 Peter 2: 13-25

For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? 1 Peter 2:18-20a

It's not fair. We hear this alot; but did anyone ever suggest everything in life would be fair?

I have an awesome story to share with you. Last week on my mission trip to Haiti, our group of nine was privileged to spend an evening with Danny Pye. He and his wife have served as US missionaries to a group of orphans in Jacmel, Haiti for nearly eight years. Together they have two children by birth and twenty-two adopted Haitian children. Visiting their home which was filled with love, tenderness and organization was an amazing experience! You may remember seeing Danny's story on Fox News, ABC, CBN or reading about it in the newspapers. He was arrested and held in a Haitian jail for five months and two days. Why? To this day there is no clear answer. No charges were ever filed against him and unanswered questions still linger in his head. Listening to Danny share his story of unsanitary conditions, unfair treatment, disease infested quarters where he shared a 10x12 cell with twenty-six other inmates, watching death played out before him through TB and cholera outbreaks, and other horrifying things kept us all on the edges of our seats. Thoughts popped into my head leading me to this one conclusion: this was so unfair and unjust! For eight years Danny and Leeann minded their own business as they served the Lord through loving the people, helping the fatherless, embracing the motherless, feeding the hungry, clothing the needy. I could feel my blood begin to boil when this thought burst in Lord, why would you allow this to happen to them? As quick as the question leaped into my mind, the Holy Spirit countered it with this phrase... What Satan means for evil, God uses for good to those who allow Him to use their story, for His glory!

I began to listen to Danny with an open heart. No bitterness, retaliation, or vengeance was detected in his voice or body language. The Fruit of the Spirit poured through him like I've never seen before... Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control. In a split second these words shot out of my mouth, "How are you forgiving all those who treated you this way? What are you doing with the anger and bitterness that could have become embedded within your soul for life?" He looked at me and calmly replied...

"I don't have it in me to forgive or let go of these unfair acts my family has endured. It's only through God's grace and mercy. God has performed a true miracle in my heart. Anything you see in me has come from Him. Because of this situation, God has opened the door to a new prison ministry for me. I am now good friends with the guards and visit with the inmates on a regular basis providing them medicines, food, Bibles and God's love. You see, I understand what they are experiencing and know how to minister to them in a way I wouldn't have known before."

For a brief second, I was beginning to think I was with a "modern day Paul." A lump slowly formed in my throat as I silently began praising the Lord. The blessing of meeting a man and his wife who understand the statement, Life's not fair and it's not supposed to be fair. We are not on this earth for our glory, but for God's glory.

Since our meeting with Danny my heart hasn't rested. My mind continues to recall each pivotal conversations. My soul rejoices from getting a glimpse of this inspirational family. I am changed because someone chose to live out God's Word in the flesh. Humbleness envelopes me when I think of God giving our team the gift of visiting with a man who is out of the box when it comes to his faith walk with Jesus!

As you know we are working our way through 1 Peter. God's timing is always perfect! The Lord handed me an unforgettable life lesson for this week's devotional on 1 Peter:13-25. No better block of scripture could speak of Danny and Leeann's story more clearly than 1 Peter 2:20b-24...

But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth. When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed.

I still have trouble catching my breath after this life changing experience. Before opening my Bible this morning, I asked the Lord to direct my writing path. He already had it figured out for me. I just needed to follow. I thank Jesus for the daily life lessons He gives us. May our eyes be open to see each one. May we not be so focused on our own agendas that we miss His teaching in the midst of our daily activities.

The challenge for all of us is to follow Danny's example... When Life's Not Fair embrace the moment, accept the fact it's not supposed to be. It wasn't fair for Jesus, so why should we expect anything different? Look for His purposes in the unjust situation and allow God to use them for His glory. A Road Less Traveled... Live for Him!

I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war again the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Peter 2:11-12

I love this picture! Take a few minutes to observe the scene. Where is the road leading? How did he get there in the first place? Notice the vehicle is teetering on the edge. All it takes is one wrong move and he's down the mountain in no time flat. Imagine the driver's physical state... heart beating ninety-miles an hour, sweat dripping, hands shaking and prayers pouring out! Can you feel his situation on this Road Less Traveled?

I recall a moment like this in my own life. It was August 1984, Fred and I drove from Bakersfield, CA to Red River, NM in a 1979 blue Ford pickup without an air conditioner. Just think of this romantic scene... the 120 degree Mojave desert wind blowing my hair, newly weds sitting side-by-side, the aroma of sweat in the air. The adventure of sleeping at the luxurious roadside park because we were saving every penny for our honeymoon destination - Red River. Oh, the blessing of creating memories to last a lifetime.

Of course there are always the "newlywed" spats that arise, especially when you are hot and tired! A day into our journey I recall becoming a bit upset because he was making all the decisions. So, he said, "Ok, you map our route from Flagstaff, AZ to Red River, NM. With excitement and a sense of power I decided the course of action. In my twenty-year old naive mind I chose the shortest route on the map. Little did I know this way would take us across an Indian Reservation and end up with us looking down a cliff onto a wooden bridge crossing The Royal Gorge. Hot, sweaty, and grumpy we gasped as we stopped at the top of the cliff! Our minds started spinning out of control. Our gas tank indicated low fuel, so there was no turning back. Moving forward we located the path leading down toward the gorge. We prayed every inch of the way. This narrow, winding dirt road caused us to focus our hearts on trusting the Lord. When we finally arrived at the bridge, teenage Indians were jumping off the bridge. As we moved stealthily over the wooden overpass they stuck their heads in our window and yelled... "Woo Woo Woo Woo" in a chanting voice. For a moment I thought I was in a television movie.

With huge sighs of relief we made it across without harm. Looking back up the cliff we realized only God could have successfully guided us down this Road Less Traveled! We thanked Him for taking care of us and helping us through this experience.

I often think of this real life experience. I had the choice of which route to take and I chose the shortcut. I didn't take into account all the obstacles, circumstances and terrain. What a lesson learned!

This resembles a spiritual lesson as well. Are you trying to take shortcuts in your Christian life? Is God calling you one way and you are taking the shortcut? What does He have for you on His path for your life? Don't miss diving into His Word. It is the only book of directions we need in life.

Are you trying to build your own road? The effort and work it takes in the labor process is almost too much to handle. But, when we take God's way it is amazing! He lays the foundation for the pathway He has planned for our lives. Channel your efforts on His Road Less Traveled and see all He has waiting for you to accomplish for Him!

Enjoy the journey... Live for Him... Pray continually... And, skip the shortcuts! AMEN!

A Precious Stone... Live for Him!

A Precious Stone

Read 1 Peter 2:4-10

What does the phrase A Precious Stone mean? Possibly these words come to mind... expensive, rare, valuable, prized, dear, shiny, valued. These descriptions may explain today's meaning of a precious stone, but is this what God meant in 1 Peter 2:4-10 (NKJV)? Look forward to some exciting discoveries today!

Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame. (Is.28:16)

Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious, but to those who are disobedient... The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone (Ps.118:22) and a stone stumbling and a rock of offense. (Is. 8:14) They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

But, you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Let's do a little review. In our last lesson, 1 Peter 2:1-5, Peter focused our attention on believers being living stones just as Jesus is the living stone. Our strength comes from Him, not of ourselves. To refresh your memory, look at the last post... Living Stones.

As Peter continues in 1 Peter 2:6-10, he shifts the reader's attention to Isaiah 28:16, Psalm 118:22, Isaiah 8:14. Why? For a variety of reasons.

First, Peter reminds the reader of Isaiah and the Psalmist prophecy. His audience knew the scriptures, and Peter clearly points out that Jesus is the fulfillment to this prophecy. I love how everything in the Old Testament points to Jesus as the true Messiah!

Secondly, the OT scriptures refer to the Chief Cornerstone. Peter points to Jesus as the chief cornerstone. It is vital to grasp this tangible spiritual life lesson. In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the first stone placed in the building's foundation. All the other stones were aligned to the chief cornerstone. Without the proper placement of this stone, the building could be unstable, shift, and over time, crumble to the ground.

The same is true in our spiritual walk. Building our lives on Jesus gives us a firm spiritual foundation... one that won't crumble when the wind blows, the earth shakes, or the storms rage. Jesus is the only one who brings stability to a person, family or nation.

Finally, focus on the word Precious. Notice it is used three times in 1 Peter 2:4-10. All these uses have one common denominator... Jesus is precious. When I looked up the word precious in the Greek (www.blueletterbible.org) my mouth dropped open and my heart leaped. Are you ready for this?

Precious means a valuing by which the price is fixed, of the price paid or received for a person or thing bought or sold.

Oh my goodness, think about the difference between the Greek meaning and today's definition of precious. Jesus, the precious chief cornerstone, brings true salvation to a lost world. He paid the price. It's fixed... non-negotiable. God's gift of salvation came through the exchange the person of Jesus Christ bought and sold with His blood. Tears flow just writing these words.

Challenge for the Week... A Precious Stone. Precious Jesus. The Chief Cornerstone. Are you aligning your spiritual home to the chief cornerstone? Or are you stacking your stones and then trying to fit Jesus into your construction? Remember, this is not God's architectural design. The more we read the plan book, the more we understand Jesus is the only solid stone equipped to handle the pressure and weight in our lives. Take time to examine your spiritual building project. Precious Jesus is ready and waiting to be placed first in your life. Enjoy the construction process!

Living Stones... Live for Him!

"As you come to Him, The Living Stone, rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him - You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood" - 1 Peter 2:4-5

Read 1 Peter 2:2-10

God’s timing is perfect! Not an accident or coincidence. At this time each year the events of Resurrection Week repeat over and over in my mind… like Jesus’ arrest, His trial, the floggings and the taunting, the crucifixion, His burial and His miraculous resurrection. Dramatic scenes from The Passion of Christ recur time and again. Realizing Jesus took on the sins of all mankind and conquered Satan forever, humbly brings me to my knees. Praises flow. Gratefulness oozes.

The living stone. Living stones. These phrases bounced off the page as I read this passage. Immediately my thoughts turned to Jesus’ tomb. In Mark 15:46 it says, “And he placed Him in a tomb cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.”

Digging into the Greek we find:

Rock means a large stone, metaphor for a man like a rock, by reason of his firmness and strength of soul
Stone means stones, of building stones; metaphor of Christ
Living means alive, living water, having vital power in itself and exerting the same upon the soul; metaphor to be in full vigor, to be fresh, strong, efficient, active, powerful

Let’s think about this for a moment. Jesus was placed in a hollowed out, cold, dark rock. For security measures, a heavy stone was placed at the opening of the tomb. It’s at this point we almost hear a crescendo playing in the heavens. For the followers of Jesus, the next three days must have felt like a lifetime. Imagine on the third day, the three women approach the tomb discussing who would move the stone from the entrance. To their amazement, the stone was already rolled away! The once dark and gloomy sepulcher is now physically filled with the morning sunlight. Spiritually the grave is overflowing with the light of Christ! Why? Because, Jesus came back to life in the deadness of the rock, rolled the stone away, and conquered Satan forever and ever! Amen!

Now comes the fun part… piecing the symbolism, metaphors and heart of scripture together. I find it interesting that Peter calls believers Living Stones who are empowered by The Living Stone—Jesus. I feel excitement brewing! Again we see stone means the same as the stone that blocked the tomb. One more vital point, Peter was the first disciple Jesus called to follow Him. At that time his name was Simon, which Jesus renamed to Peter, which means a rock or stone. Wow, we are on to something!

I see a theme developing. After Jesus died, they laid Him in tomb where a large stone blocked the entrance. No way in, no way out! But, nothing halted God’s ultimate plan—Jesus rose from the dead and rolled the stone away giving free access inside. In a split second, Jesus became, "The Living Stone – rejected by men but chosen by God…” Peter (a stone or rock) goes on to say, “As you come to Him you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood…”

Challenge for Resurrection Week… As followers of The Living Stone, we are charged with the same purpose—to be Living Stones. Dead rocks are worthless with no energy. But, Living Stones brings freshness, full vigor, strength, efficient, active, power to build a spiritual house. This week, as you view the tomb and the stone that was rolled away let it be your reminder that Jesus is alive! He calls us to build our lives on the solid rock. Live out your faith on a daily basis living and breathing in Him. Enjoy the Living Stones God has placed in your life! Relish each one as a vital part of the build process.

Spiritual Nourishment... Live for Him!

“Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as new born babies, desire pure milk of the Word, that you may grow.” 1 Peter 2:1-2 (NKJV)

I love dissecting scripture! Grasping the true meaning of the words from the Greek and Hebrew definitions gives Spiritual Nourishment to the soul. It’s like examining and understanding the Nutrition Fact on the side of food boxes. May today’s journey impact your walk with the Lord as we break apart 1 Peter 2:1-2.

Desire… Greek Definition: to long for, crave, to pursue with love, to long after.

What do you long for in life? Do you crave more money, success, power, recognition, material things, or possibly perfection? Or, do you long after righteousness, mercy and grace through Jesus?

Pure milk… Greek Definitions:

· Pure: unmixed, unadulterated, sincere

· Milk: a metaph. for the less difficult Christian truths

Would you mix a teaspoon of garlic in a bottle of milk for your baby? No way! Without a doubt, the baby’s tummy would keep him crying for hours! Neither is it a good idea to water down the baby’s milk to the point at which the nutrients are depleted. Just as a baby requires pure milk, our walk with Jesus must contain purified, unpolluted, sincere biblical truths. The result: Spiritual Nourishment! This leads us to the next part of the verse…

Of the word… Greek Definition: logikos means spoken word, pertaining to the soul or spirit.

More than likely you have heard the old statement, “You are what you eat.” There is even a book out with this title. It focuses on a nutrition program to improve health and change dietary habits. Hmm, I see a spiritual life lesson forming. Just as healthy physical food energizes the physical body, so feeding on the true and solid spoken word about Jesus Christ feeds the soul. Now we are getting somewhere!

That you may Grow… Greek Definition: to grow, increase speaking of plants, infants, a multitude of people, inward Christian growth.

Now, I am trying to contain myself. I want to jump out of my chair and shout, “God you are so awesome!” Think about this, in order to grow in our walk with the Lord and experience Spiritual Nourishment we must first crave the sincere, unaltered Christian truths! As we humbly desire and grasp the gift of God’s grace and unconditional love through His son Jesus Christ our soul is nourished. Daily realizing, "Life is not about me, but all about Him" feeds the mind and heart with the truths of God. Believing, "The only way to the Father is through His son" energizes our purpose into action. Oh, I could go on and on. I love reading and diving into the Word of God!

Challenge for the Week… Can a baby live off of one bottle of milk a week? No! It’s more like 6-8 bottles a day. Likewise, can a child of God grow and mature spiritually with one feeding on Sunday mornings? No! We would stay weak and frail in our Christian life. This week crave to seek the Lord’s truths through reading His Word, praying throughout your day and looking for God's life lessons along the way. He is waiting to give you Spiritual Nourishment everyday!

Forever and Ever, Amen... Live for Him!

All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.

The grass withers, and its flower falls away, But the Word of the Lord endures forever.” 1 Peter 1:24-25

Read 1 Peter 1:22-25 with Isaiah 40:6-8

Forever and Ever… Amen.

These words seem to roll off the tongue with such ease. But, do we really grasp its meaning? Do you know how many times God planted this phrase in His Word? It appears 279 times in the King James Version! Wow, God is making a major point with this group of words. Together let’s discover some heavenly treasures about Forever and Ever, Amen in 1 Peter 1:24-25! Peter is quoting Isaiah 40:6-8.

Real life analogies help us understand God’s spiritual life lessons. So, since this is springtime let’s use roadside wildflowers as our visual as we excavate this scripture. You know the beautiful bouquets that appear over night?

All flesh = Man = Grass = the grass on the side of the road = Withers = Dries up

All the glory of man = The Grass’ Flower like the Indian Paint Brush, Bluebonnet, or Black-Eyed Susan = Falls away = Fades = Temporary

Endures forever = the Word of the Lord = God’s promises in the Bible = Eternal, Everlasting, Never changing!

Oh my goodness, don’t miss this…

When we glorify ourselves God’s “moisture” spiritual depletes from my soul. The fruit of my labor begins to droop, shrivel, and die like a fading flower due to the lack of “living water” that only the Lord provides. But, we can’t stop here. Isaiah 40:7 drives home a deeper picture for us…

The grass withers, the flower fades, because the breath of the Lord blows upon it. Isaiah 40:7

What happens to dried wildflowers in the heat of the summer? How do the wildflowers respond as the relentless winds blow, the sun's rays streamline the fields, and the rains subside? They experience a slow death. Does this mean they don’t have the potential to reappear? No, they are dormant and ready to spring into action when the weather conditions are just right.

Real Life Application… As God’s children, we are to always give God the Glory for everything He does through us… feeding the homeless, working at church, teaching a women's group, leading a committee, encouraging words spoken, financially helping others, etc. The second we take glory for anything God does through us it’s like the flower of the grass fading away. The breath of the Lord is like the wind blowing the petals off the plant in the heat of the summer. He chooses to use us as His hands and feet. Our physical bodies wither and our acts of kindness fade away, but the Lord is Forever and Ever. Amen!

Redeemed... Live for Him!

"... knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as a lamb without blemish and without spot."

1 Peter 1:18,19 (NKJV)

Read 1 Peter 1: 17-21

Do you live with a heavenly perspective or an earthly point of view? Think for a moment. Be honest. Where is your focus: The world or the Lord? Hum, these are important questions.

When reading the verses above, notice the word redeemed embedded in the heart of the message. Redeemed from what? Redeemed by whom and why? Digging into these verses helps us grasp the meaning and purpose.

The Strong's Concordance defines Redeemed in the Greek as "liberate by payment of ransom, to cause to be released to one's self by payment of a ransom, to deliver from evils of every kind: internal and external." Thinking through this last definition almost makes me leap out of my chair! To deliver from evils of every kind: internal and external... Jesus paid it all. He exchanged Himself for my ransom, our ransom. He rescued all, who trust in Him, from the pit. Jesus bridged the gap between us and God. Wow, humbleness flows!

In light of these definitions, how do we live a life that reflects God's grace and mercy? How do we base every decision, attitude and action on the fact that "Life is not about me, but all about Jesus, our Redeemer?" Below are three steps to stay in-tune with the Lord...

First: REnew...

The first part of 1 Peter 1:17 says, "And if you call on the Father..." Notice Peter uses the word if, which indicates a choice made by the one reading or hearing the message. Daily we need to renew our heart in the Lord. Make a choice to call upon Him everyday. Renew your strength in the Lord. Renew your mind in realizing Jesus redeemed you and paid the penalty for your sin.

Second: DEsire...

1 Peter 1:17 says, "... live your life as strangers here in reverent fear." We must desire to live every moment knowing that Jesus took on the sins of the world. Understanding that we are responsible for each choice we make. God knows the desire of our heart. God sees if it is for selfish gain or to further the Kingdom of God.

Third: EMpower...

Verse 21 Peter focuses our attention on, "Through Him (Jesus) believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God." Peter is telling us it's Jesus who gives us the strength to believe in God. We can't drum it up ourselves. Jesus empowers us to believe and trust fully in God. The minute we think we can do it ourselves, we miss the mark.

Challenge for the Week... REnew your DEsire to live a life EMpowered by Jesus! Daily realize "Life is not about me, but all about Him." Living 24/7 knowing you are redeemed by the blood of Jesus changes your perspective on decisions, actions and circumstances. Praise God for His grace and mercy which go beyond our understanding!

Read 1 Peter 1:10-16

Step 1: Think...

Honey, you must think before you speak. These words continue to remain fresh in my mind. As a child, this phrase was used as a teaching tool in our home. It was years before I actually understood its meaning. Then one day, like activating a light bulb, I grasped the concept. Reading God's Word opened my eyes to understand that thinking before you speak is actually Taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ-1 Corinthians 10:5.

This actually became the cry of my heart... "Lord, may every word that flows from my mouth be edifying and encouraging. I ask for you to help me think before I speak!" As Christians our goal is to think like Christ. Take every thought captive to the obedience of Him.

Step 2: Prepare...

Now that we are thinking clearly it is time to prepare. Prepare for what? I almost laughed when I read the 1 Peter 1:13 verse in the NKJV... Gird up the loins of your mind. In fact, as I think of this picture I am smiling. In order to truly grasp this phrase we need a little history lesson. In biblical days, everyone wore long robes. In order to move quickly they gathered them up and tied them around their waist... kind of like a diaper. This allowed them to run without stumbling on their own clothing. The same is true with our minds. We need clear Godly thinking so we can do whatever it takes to serve God successfully without tripping on our own thoughts.

Be prepared. Wow, such an action packed statement. How do we prepare? By seeking the Lord daily through His Word, a continuous heart of prayer, surrendering it all to Jesus, living a life sold out to Jesus. God calls us to be ready for what lies ahead. We must move forward with Godly thinking so we can prepare for action!

Step 3: Act...

Prepare your minds for action... Let's read the rest of verse 13 through 16, "be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy."

Notice how many action words are in these verses: be self-controlled, set your hope, do not conform, be holy. In order to put these things into action we must take every thought captive and get our minds ready for action. Then activate self-control, focus on Jesus 24/7, and to be transformed, renew your mind through the Word of God, live a life sold out to Jesus, and be holy as God is holy. Wow!

Writing this devotional reminds me of working in my yard...

Think... Prior to buying new flowers, I walk around observing what I need to purchase and set up a plan for the flowerbeds.

Prepare... Next, I purchase the plants and potting soil. Arriving home I gather the gardening tools needed. I strategically place the plants in the designated areas and prepare the soil.

Act... Now it is time to move into action. I dig the hole and place the plant inside. Then I gently cover the hole with soil and water.

Today, ask the Lord to remind you of these vital areas in your spiritual walk. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to think, prepare and act so you are holy, as God is holy in everything you do. Today, look for ways to apply these spiritual concepts in your everyday life. I promise, God gives us opportunities to practice on a daily basis. It is up to us to recognize His hand in our lives!

A Room with a View

Focus Scripture: 1 Peter 1-9

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. -1 Peter 1:3-5

I am excited to share a new adventure at Carla's Corner. For the next few weeks we will make our way through 1 Peter. This should be an inspiring journey as we discover spiritual lessons taught by a man named Peter who physically walked, talked and traveled with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Get ready for eye-opening and heart-touching moments!

Remember a few weeks ago I challenged you to ask God for a Focus Verse for 2011? What verse did God pour over you? If you haven't done this yet it's not too late. My Focus Verse is 1 Peter 4:11 which says,

If anyone speaks let it be the very words of God. If anyone serves let it be with the strength that God provides. So that in ALL things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and honor forever and ever. Amen.

In amazement, the Lord has truly embedded this verse in my soul. Throughout my day I am reminded to live out the day according to these words. My perspective has changed course due to living out Peter's words on a daily basis. Have fun locating your Focus Verse!

Viewing the picture above imagine yourself sitting in the living room. Fresh air flows in through the open window. Just breathing puts a smile on your face. Scanning the tops of the mountains you begin to capture the view in motion picture form. In the far distance you notice a haze creeping over the peaks and into the valleys. Frustration sets in as your view becomes skewed. The beauty fades into the fog. Faced with a choice, you decide to focus on trusting that the view will return once the cloud is lifted.

This is similar to what Peter was saying in 1 Peter 1:1-9.

Basically, his point was as believers we have a living hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you! Then, as if to hear the sound of a crescendo Paul states in verse 6-7...

In this you greatly rejoice, though for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

It's like looking through the window with a view. The majestic scene may be distorted for a brief period, but trusting the fog will lift is vital. Our living hope is not based on our circumstances, but what is to come. God allows situations in life to strengthen our faith and trust in Him. Reading verses 8-9 deepen our understanding of this point. I will summarize...

Have not seen Him (Faith) ->
                        Love for Jesus ->
                                   We believe in Him ->
                                            Filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy =
                                                                                              The Goal of your Faith

Challenge for the Week... Are you experiencing living hope? Is your view from the window hopeful or disappointing? Keep your eyes on the prize. Trust Peter's words. He speaks truth. Peter knows what he is talking about. Remember, Jesus predicted Peter's denial. I am sure his sin remains in the forefront of his mind and heart on a minute by minute basis. The fog will soon pass. Don't miss the opportunity to deepen your faith in Him!

Treasured moments. New Friendships. Seasoned conversations. Prayers answers. Sweet connections. I can't get it out of my mind. Savored memories repeat themselves like a never-ending melody. Blessings still flow from the experience!

If you attended Share Fair 2011 Prayer. Purpose. Passion you know what I am talking about. Words can't begin to describe what God did at this event. Our prayer for the past twelve months included such areas as the facility, the theme, the keynote and breakout speakers, the Share Fair staff, Information Exchange vendors, publicity, small group facilitators, the small groups, our newest addition "Friday Night Live" and more. On a deeper level we prayed for connections among ministries, encouragement for ministry leaders, God's words to pour through the speakers, deep conversations, intimate moments with the Lord, authentic worship, for the women to experience realness with one another, and the Holy Spirit to move the hearts of the people at Share Fair.

Once again blessings flow as I write this blog entry. I even have "God Bumps!" With excitement and passion I must say the Lord went far above what we laid before Him in prayer. We truly experienced Ephesians 3:20, 21...

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Some of The Share Fair Prayer Team

The Share Fair Prayer Team bathed this event with a heart of love and passion. Their willingness to pour out their hearts and love opened the door for the Lord to do mighty and victorious things. Thank you to each of you for going the extra mile for us!

So many positive comments about Friday Night Live. With the heart and gift of worship, Amy Nobles and Amber led us to the throne of God. The RLM Drama team touched our heart through drama and Ballet Excelsior brought us to our knees in gentle praise. The sweet "little" humor of Julie Zick blessed us beyond words. And, the testimony of Joyce Chavez brought out a realness.

Blessings flowed on into Saturday as we focused on Prayer, the key to any ministry. And, Dawn and Stephanie opened our hearts to finding God's Purpose for serving Him. Nancy Williams eyed us in on the passion for serving the Lord. The breakout sessions equipped us with some details in building, maintaining and balancing ministry in our lives. Every small group thought theirs was the best group, so obviously sweet connections were made!

I must say once again... Treasured moments. New Friendships. Seasoned conversations. Prayers answers. Sweet connections. I can't get it out of my mind. Savored memories repeat themselves like a never-ending melody. Blessings still flow from the whole Share Fair 2011 experience!

Heart of Love...Live for Him!

As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love... 9-10

Love is in the air...

How do you define love? Is it best described by a word or an action? Do you "feel love" or are you "in love?" What's the difference? Think for a few moments, where did you learn the meaning of love... your parents, grandparents, husband, church, friends, television, the movies, magazines, books, commercials?

These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you... 11-12

Defined by the world, love seems to focus on the receiver. But, the Word of God projects a whole different meaning. It is so much fun to go back to the original text and examine the words from their root meaning. Looking at these verses in John the word love is mentioned 8 times. The Greek word for love is agape which means brotherly love, affection, good will, benevolence. There is an interchange of the Greek word agapo used in these verses as well which means to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly. Either meaning casts the focus on the heart of the giver.

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends... 13

When replacing the word love with the agape meaning it reads like this... Greater brotherly love, affection, good will, benevolence has no one than this: to lay down one's life for his friends. True love is best defined by abiding in Jesus. It's like a ripple affect:

God dearly loves Jesus -> Jesus dearly loves me -> I dearly love others

In a further study you would find that this kind of love is not something you can personally drum up yourself. You do not have the capability to produce agape love. It only comes through abiding in Jesus. Seeking Him daily and staying close to Him through prayer, studying the Bible, obeying His commands, living your faith out daily.

On this Valentines Day I am truly humbled and challenged. When I think of Jesus' words: no greater love than to lay down one's life for his friends. He viewed His death on the cross as an act of love for His friends... past, present and future. This includes you and me! Wow, true love is unconditional, selfless, thinks of others before himself, sacrificial.

Challenge for the Week... As you look at the picture above, think of God's love flowing through the "Son" of God through your cloudy situations. Choose to not just see God's love, but experience the warmth of His love. Don't keep it to yourself. Share it with others through a smile, a prayer, an act of giving, forgiving others or whatever way the Lord directs. Then, expect to experience John 15:11... These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. There is nothing like the joy of the Lord! Happy Valentines Week!

Still Laughing... Live for Him!

Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning. Psalm 33:5

Laughter is the body's best medicine.

Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.

Laughter is an instant vacation.

I remember growing up hearing these statements. I'm not sure how true they are, but each lead us to believe a sense of humor brings positive results. Learning to laugh is a skill... or is it?

Dictionary.com defines laughter as the action or sound of laughing. Going a step further we see laughing means that which laughs or is given to laughter. So, what is the meaning of the word... laugh? Laugh is to express mirth, pleasure, derision, or nervousness with an audible, vocal expulsion of air from the lungs that can range from a loud burst of sound to a series of quiet chuckles and is usually accompanied by characteristic facial and bodily movements.

Why am I sharing this information? Well, for some odd reason, incidents happen in my life that bring others to the point of laughter. In fact, one of my closest life-long friends said she thinks the Lord has allowed all these funny moments, so I can use them as teaching points in my speaking engagements. Well, if you have heard me speak at an event you know I have plenty of "teaching points!" Let me share a fresh one with you.

A couple of weeks ago, I awoke with excitement. It was my first day to teach Reflecting Him at WoodsEdge Community Women's Bible Study Group in The Woodlands. As I lay there I started praying over the women; asking God to connect our hearts. I meditated on the "Focus Verse" for Reflecting Him,

"And we, with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His likeness from ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 Cor 3:18.

Finally, I climbed out from under the warm covers. Stumbled into the bathroom. With my vision still blurred, I glanced into the mirror. Something caught my attention. Closing in for a better look, my mouth dropped to the ground. Two days before I had my 2nd "chemical peel" treatment, but this time my friend added an extra "booster" to the process. All I can say is it worked! For a brief moment, my mind spun out of control with thoughts like, "The women probably won't even notice. I could play sick. I will walk in at the last minute and leave after Amen."

But, reality stopped the spinning wheel as God reminded me of the purpose of Reflecting Him... to recognize the spiritual life lessons God gives us everyday. God has confirmed to me over and over how important it is to be real and authentic at all speaking engagements. Needless to say, I was the "living" example that morning of the focus verse... with Unveiled faces. I am not kidding, my face was unmasking by the sheets. The whole class of about 100 women experienced the true meaning of laughter. The room filled with vocal expulsion of air from the lungs ranging from loud burst of sounds to a series of quiet chuckles. An answered prayer... I connected with the ladies. I must smile thinking about the creative ways God works things to His glory!

Challenge for the Week... Ask the Lord to bring some laughter into your life. Of course, I am not talking about laughing at people. I am encouraging true, pure humor that causes you to experience the "joy of the Lord." I know God has a sense of humor and we are created in His image. Think about it... in Numbers 22:28 He allowed a donkey to talk! Look for opportunities to laugh and smile. I can't wait to hear some of your experiences!

Life Verse for 2011... Live for Him!

When God speaks...

Listen.

On January 1st, the Lord planted a thought in my head. One that surfaces on a daily basis. I can't shake it from my heart and mind.

At the beginning of each year, I enjoy scanning a mental survey of the past year... evaluating the accomplishments, reviewing the changes, and setting the goals for the next twelve months. As I have matured (Ok, gotten older) I've come to realize and believe God knows what each year brings. Trusting Him for the future is what He calls me to do. As a result, he is taking down a fresh path. A new journey for 2011!

Reading the Word of God is so much fun! It's almost as if a verse I've read over and over all of a sudden comes alive. Do you know what I mean? The freshness of the Holy Spirit connecting my thoughts to the heart of Jesus through God's Word amazes me!

The morning began with a fresh cup of coffee, a quiet house, my 5 lb Maltese at my side, and Bible in hand. A perfect scene to spend a few moments with the Lord. In my cozy place, I decided to play the "Bible Bingo" game. You know... The "Lord, what do you want me to read this morning" game. I flopped open my Bible to 1 Peter 4. The words literally came off the page and into my heart...

"If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 4:11

Immediately, I felt the Holy Spirit pulling my heart strings as these powerful words filled my soul with freshness...

Here is your Life Verse for 2011!

Memorize it. Believe it. Live it!

God what does this mean... Life Verse? What are you saying to me?

Carla, every time you open your mouth let My words flow. When you serve as a wife and mother or in ministry through RLM let it always be through the strength that I give you. Never in your own power! So in all things I will be glorified through your relationship with my son, Jesus! I am giving you this verse to live by in 2011.

Claim it. Apply it. Live it!

I am following the prompting of the Holy Spirit and making 1 Peter 4:11 my Life Verse for 2011. I am so excited to live for Him through this verse by letting God use my vocal chords. To serve in the strength He gives me. In fact, for the next few weeks we will make our way through 1 Peter 4. Each sentence is packed with a powerful message for believers. Let's enjoy learning and growing together!

Challenge for the Week... Ask the Lord to show you a Life Verse for 2011! I promise this is a fun and exciting treasure hunt. Write it out. Memorize it. Place it in a strategic place: on your bathroom mirror, in your car, a sticky note on the computer, and more. Have fun as the Lord shows you exactly your verse to focus on for the year. Let Him teach and lead you through the learning process. Share this idea with other people. You never know how the Lord is going to use your "vocal chords" to spread His message to others.

Out with the Old, In with the New... Live for Him!

Philippians 3:12-14 (NIV)

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Out with the Old...

In with the New...

A fresh start. Forgetting what is behind and moving forward. What is the full meaning of this statement? Think about it for a minute... Out with the Old, In with the New. For some it means a new commitment, something like a New Year's Resolution... exercise, eating healthy, daily routine, change an attitude, self-discipline, modifying an old habit, or reading through the Bible in that year. Statistics show the first Sunday in January has one of the highest attendances all year long. But, is there more to this statement than making physical changes?

I love a treasure hunt! Let's look deeper into the Philippians 3:12-14 passage and read it from the NKJV...

Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.

Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Diggin' into the meaning of these words gives me a better understanding of this block of scripture. It is vital to grasp that Paul is writing to the church in Philippi - to believers in Jesus. Paul is not talking about working his way to a position in heaven. He secured this spot the minute He trusted in Jesus. But, Paul focuses here on the condition of His relationship with His Lord and Savior. In other words, His maturity as a believer.

Ok, now with this clear understanding let's break this verse apart. Not... attained in the Greek means, he has not yet "gained possession of" or "laid hold of" all he seeks to be. Perfected here in the Greek means "mature, complete, finished." Paul isn't focused on moral perfection or righteousness, but a "work in progress" or state of completion as a Christian. In other words, becoming more like Jesus every day! This is the goal.

Paul is clear to let us know that his past sins will always be before him, but he refuses to let them dictate his goal to press forward in maturing as a Christian. His realness here is a powerful message for all of us. Not to live in defeat, but press forward in the calling God has upon our lives! AMEN!

It reminds me of 2 Corinthians 5:17, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come."

Out with the Old... Man

In with the New... Man

Now, we are getting somewhere! There is definitely more to this statement of old. Diving into Phil 3:12-14 refreshed in me a sweet desire to seek Him daily in 2011. As a result, the Lord pointed me to a "Focus Verse" for this year. Not just to memorize, but one that challenges me to live for Him. In fact, you will notice each 2011 blog post will end with "...Live for Him!" (In 2009, the blog entries ended with "... Pray!" and 2010 they all ended with "... Praise Him!")

The Women in White... Praise Him!

The Women in White

Matthew 25:31-40

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Then the King will say to those on his right, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."

Then the righteous will answer him, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?"

The King will reply, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

September 20, 2010...

Feelings of anxiousness surfaced as we walked through the front gate of the prison. One... two... three heavy metal doors locked behind us. Our destination: Pod 9. With each step thoughts flooded my mind... Would they accept us? How are we going to connect with these ladies? God, only you have the ability to link our hearts together. I give this all to you!

All of a sudden, I noticed a Woman in White walking in the same direction. As we got closer, I realized she held her Bible and the Reflecting Him Bible study tightly against her chest. Immediately a lump developed in my throat. I whispered to Kitty, "Did you ever think when I was writing and you were editing Reflecting Him that it would be used for a prison Bible study?" A sweet peace fell like a blanket from heaven.

Eighteen Women in White flowed into the room – some already clutching their Reflecting Him books, others eagerly accepting them as they walked through the door. The Bible study leaders from Kingwood UMC, Laura and Cheryl, welcomed each one. For the past five years, on Monday nights, they have led Bible studies for women in prison. I am reminded of the block of scriptures above in Matthew 25, "I was in prison and you came to visit me... Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Wow, what a blessing to know these precious servants of the Lord.

Cheryl introduced me to the group as the author of the Bible study, and with my heart pounding, I silently prayed... Oh, God please empty me of me and fill me with you. Speak through me! This Reflecting Him Kickoff is yours, not mine. Kitty, my sweet ministry partner, sat quietly praying over each word. One by one, the downcast faces turned to looks of hope. Hope in the one true Savior... Jesus! To God be the glory, we connected! Joy replaced doubt and fear. When we closed the kickoff we all circled up in prayer. One lady prayed the Lord would use this study to help her understand God's Word. Tears flowed as prayers poured out to the Lord. Evidence of the Holy Spirit's presence penetrated the room.

These women, from all walks of life, joined together for the next ten weeks to do the Reflecting Him Bible study. During those weeks other groups were also going through Reflecting Him. The Lord led me to ask some of them to pray for these women. Groups from Doha (Qatar), The Woodlands and Cy Fair, Texas, and Michigan continued praying for the Women in White.

Ten Weeks Later...

Once again, Kitty and I found ourselves driving to the prison for the Reflecting Him Celebration. With each passing mile a growing anticipation emerged. Walking into the front gate we were searched, scanned and then we handed over all identity to the entrance guard. Again the doors locked behind us. Making our way to Pod 9, I asked the Lord to prepare us to receive from Him. In that moment, the prayers from so many prayer warriors washed over me.

One by one the Women in White walked into the room. Tears flowed as I hugged each one and listened to each story. They all had something to say. My heart leaped with joy! I must share one testimony with you. During the Reflecting Him kickoff one woman kept her head down the whole time staring at the floor. I recall Kitty and me talking about her on our drive home that evening. Now, ten weeks later, she walked into the room with her head held high and she immediately came up to hug me. With tears in her eyes she shared how God touched her life through Reflecting Him and she's developed a prayer life. This study inspired her to turn her "thought life" to a "prayer life." I still she her face Reflecting Him!

Remember the lady who prayed to understand God's Word? Her powerful testimony explained how the Holy Spirit taught her to grasp the spiritual life lessons in each week of the study. Another shared about the spiritual warfare she experienced in her dorm room, as she plunged through the study. Another talked about the miracles that happened before their eyes. On and on, one after the other poured their hearts out. The veils were removed and realness was exposed! Praise the Lord!

Amazingly, eighteen Women in White started Reflecting Him and eighteen Women in White completed the study with excellence! Their commitment and dedication to finish the race inspired and encouraged me. You will love this... other Women in White throughout the prison are now calling Pod 9...The God Pod!

A big "Thank You" to all who prayed for these ladies. Please keep praying for them. Some don't have places to go when they are released. Cheryl and Laura plan to do Reflecting Him again in the summer with a new group of Women in White. Reflective Life Ministries has an ongoing ministry called "Reflecting Him in Prison." Christmas Memories Future...

Emotions stir this time of year. Watching the movie "White Christmas" always takes me back in time. In fact, warmth fills my heart just thinking about it. Last night while watching this great classic I spread all the unwrapped presents, the paper, bows, ribbon, scissors, and tape out in front of me. Then I worked with precision on my creations. Wrapping each gift brought a fresh anticipation to the giving process.

In the midst of the wrapping frenzy I zeroed in on a specific pile of gifts... seven Bibles. My heart jumped with excitement! This year Reflective Life Ministries has partnered with the Coupon Angels in adopting a family for Christmas. The Coupon Angels are providing the Christmas meal, clothing and toys. And, RLM purchased age appropriate Bibles for each member of the family and engraved first names on the front. Then I focused in on each name and began praying...

Oh Lord, may these children know the true gift of Christmas... Jesus. I ask that they understand Your love for them. Help them to grasp that the gift of salvation comes only through a relationship with Jesus. Lord, help them as early as possible desire a relationship with you. Prompt their hearts to read Your Word! I ask that their mom and grand-mama's hearts be prepared to receive these Bibles. Draw them to yourself and touch them with your tenderness. AMEN!

Immediately the Holy Spirit reminded me of John 4:10...

Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.

As I wrapped the other gifts I began praying over each of those individuals. Oh, that each would understand the true gift of God is Jesus. And, they would desire a daily relationship with Him. Before I knew it the wrapping process was complete.

Challenge for the Season... Take a few minutes to think about John 4:10. How does it apply to us? How can we share this verse with others at this time of year? What are we instilling in our family that creates Christmas Memories Future? Is it toys and clothes which don't last? Or is it the gift of Jesus which lasts forever? Wow, I think I am writing this challenge for myself!

One way to build Christmas Memories Future is by standing in the gap for others through prayer. We can also give them a taste of the "Living Water" through our actions, words, attitude, love, prayers! Ask the Lord to help you recognize those He is placing in your path this Christmas season. Merry Christmas to all!

Christmas Memories Present... Praise Him!

Memories.

Moments from the past.

Recalling last week's post, Christmas Memories Past, we took a step back in time reviewing Christmas' in our childhood. This week we move into Christmas Memories Present. This morning as I prayed over this blog entry a fresh thought emerged. Present actually has two meanings: a) the here and now, b) an unmerited gift. After reflecting on these descriptions I realize Christmas Memories Present takes on both definitions.

The Here and Now...

Whether we know it or not, memories occur during this time of year. In the form of traditions, singing Christmas carols, Candle Light services, reading the Christmas story, laughter, relatives gathering, the aroma of baked goods, decorating the tree, and so much more. At this present time, lifelong memories are building for your children and grandchildren. It is during the Here and Now these young, impressionable minds are influenced to focus on the true reason for the season. We as parents and grandparents are blessed with creating memories which reflect the greatest gift of all... Jesus! This leads us to our second definition of Christmas Memories Present.

An Unmerited Gift...

What does this mean? Unmerited Gift? By definition it is an unearned favor and doesn't require something in return. It is unconditional and given out of ultimate love.I remember waking up on Christmas morning to presents under the tree. Whether I deserved them or not they were there. Opening each beautifully wrapped package brought excitement and anticipation. Learning to accept the gift with appreciation and humbleness was my part of the deal. As time passed, I realized it went beyond the material to the heart of the giver.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This verse has a deeper meaning after focusing on Christmas Memories Present. God's Unmerited Gift - Jesus - freely given to ALL who will open their hearts and receive this gift of eternal life. Forever. Nothing expected in return. Amazing!

May our Christmas Memories Present consist of both definitions... The Here and Now & The Unmerited Gift! Have fun building special moments with your children and grandchildren in the present. And, don't forget to focus on the greatest present of all... God's Son, Jesus!

Christmas Memories Past... Praise Him!

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!" Luke 2:13-14

Christmas Memories Past...

Let's do a little Christmas reminiscing. What memories pop into your head? Possibly the festive meals, the beautifully wrapped presents, or waiting up all night to hear the sleigh bells jingle on the rooftop? Maybe your thoughts linger to moments of family gatherings. This is where my heart rests.

In my childhood Christmas opened the door to family. Not just immediate family, but extended family. On my dad's side, Christmas Eve was an invitation for all the relatives to pop in. From morning until night my grandmother's house represented a revolving door. Each year I met a new batch of cousins I had no idea existed! Then as evening approached, we all load up in cars and headed to my great aunt's house to experience her "Open Door Policy." I remember the difficulty finding places to park due to the number of visitors. A warmth rises in my heart just thinking about the hugs as we walked through the door! She always hosted a variety of desserts no one could resist. Then, later in the evening we would make our way to my mom's side of the family. The moment I entered my aunt and uncle's home love and laughter filled the air. Oh, what memories to behold!

Christmas Memories Past...

For some, these memories aren't as pleasant and sweet. In fact, statistics show depression rises during this time of year. It could be due to broken family relationships, loneliness, financial stresses, the weather, loss of a loved one, unmet expectations, and more. If this is you, please be assured from this moment forward God can make things different. Allow the Lord to use your Christmas Memories Past story, for His glory! Make a difference this season by focusing on Jesus... the Reason for the Season! Find joy in opening your home to neighbors, friends, relatives and others.

I must confess, I have fallen into the trap of thinking my house must have the "perfect" Christmas look before I invite people over. Oh my goodness, this way of thinking is so far from my relatives mind set! They never worried if the colors totally matched or if all the tree lights worked. They just invited ALL to come! Hmm... looks like I have some things to work on myself. I will let you know how things go as I move into the season! Dear God, thank you for the example of the heart of my relatives'. May I continue to pass this same tradition on the generations that follow.

Challenge for the week... Why does Christmas bring families together? What makes this time of year a drawing factor for relatives? How can this year be different from Christmas Memories Past? I have an idea, use this time to pray for those you only visit with once a year. Ask God to open your eyes as you pray for these special people. God has placed you in your family for a reason. You might be the only one God is silently calling to stand in the gap for these relatives. Ask the Holy Spirit to be your reminder. Pray that they know Jesus personally, as Lord and Savior. Oh, have a blessed time creating Christmas Memories Past for generations to come!

Thankful Attitude... Praise Him!

Straighten up your attitude, right now!

You need to be thankful for what you have!

Please have a thankful heart!

Do these statements ring a bell? Do you recall these words flowing from your mother's mouth? I smile just thinking about my mom's wisdom. As a child, when I displayed an ungrateful attitude she had the ability to speak through her eyes. You know what I mean. My sisters and I called it, "The Look." We knew it was in our best interest to immediately straighten up! It's amazing how "The Look" passed from her to her daughters. Now as a mom, I find myself using these same facial expressions with my children. And... it works!

An ungrateful attitude affects not only the person, but also others around her. What does it mean to have a A Thankful Heart. Why not a Thankful Mouth? Or a Thankful Face?

As in water face reflects face, so a man's heart reveals the man. Proverbs 27:19 (NKJV)

The Lord doesn't look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

Oh my! This is it! We are looking on the outside while God is focused on the inside. Our character is created within the heart of man. The more we love Jesus, the more we reflect Him in our conversations and our actions. As we seek His face, we become His reflection! It all begins in the heart... A Thankful Attitude which reflects a Thankful Heart which affects a the face and the mouth!

A Thankful Heart... produces A Thankful Attitude... which creates Peaceful Expressions and Pleasant Words!

Challenge for the Week... This Thanksgiving as you sit down at the table don't focus as much on the delicious food, but on the love that went into making the feast. Appreciate the ones who spent hours preparing, shopping and creating the family meal. A Thankful Attitude... loves, serves others, encourages with words, lends a hand (at the cleanup-hint, hint), and is grateful in all circumstances. In fact, write out Psalm 100:5 and use this for your Thanksgiving verse. This is a great focus verse for the Thanksgiving season! Live a life sold out to Jesus with a Thankful Attitude that says... Life is not about me, but all about Him! Amen!

In the Silence... Praise Him!

"I wait for you, O Lord; You will answer, O Lord My God." Psalm 38:15

"Sometimes the silence of the Lord is His way of letting us grow. If at times God allows conflict, it may be His way of training us." Corrie Ten Boom

Silence. Why is this so difficult?

Can you remember a time you prayed with all your heart about something? Maybe for years and years. Yet, it seemed as if your prayers hit the ceiling and bounced back? In all honesty, this can be discouraging! In fact, this is the point at which many decide to give up and throw in the towel.

Silence. How do we keep trusting when we don't see results?

Reading Corrie Ten Boom's life story brings me to tears. Through difficult and life threatening situations her faith in God never wavered. She trusted God even when she didn't see immediate results. How? She believed in who God was, not what He could do for her. She trusted in the Word of God. Her faith was not based on what God did in her life, but in the character of God. When life circumstances became more and more difficult she remained strong in her walk with Jesus. She focused on Him, not the situation. As a result, her life example of trusting God has passed down from generation to generation.

Silence. Sometimes in the stillness, God is doing His greatest work!

God calls us to listen to Him. Trust His plan. Surrender it all, without strings attached. Cast our cares upon Him without reeling them back. So, In the Silence... is it active or passive? What does God call us to do when don't see results?

Pray. Continue to lift our requests before Him.

Trust. God is in the midst of working it to His glory.

Praise Him... Before we know the answers.

Challenge for the Week... For years have you prayed for God to answer a request? Do you trust He is in control? Is the stillness weighing on you? I challenge all of us to turn those moments into a deeper faith in Jesus. Remember Corrie Ten Boom's words, "Sometimes the silence of the Lord is His way of letting us grow." Have fun this week praying, trusting and praising Him In the Silence.

Unexpected Storms... Praise Him!

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

Have you experienced an Unexpected Storm? One that sends your mind spinning out of control. Your physical body resembles the after-shocks of an earthquake with 6.0 magnitude. Overwhelming thoughts surge. Fear replaces trust. The flood gate of tears spill over as a quickening in your spirit emerges... Wait a Minute! Psalm 46 says, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Your heart immediately is set at ease.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

In a split second your flesh is activated. The Unexpected Storm remains. Circumstances escalate. The need to control comes into play... husband, children, extended family, friends, work, church decisions, football games, the government, world events and more. In your minds eye life appears bleak. All of a sudden, you remember Psalm 46, God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Peace flows like a river.

Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the chariots with fire.

Focusing on Psalm 46 slowly changes your perspective. You believe God. You trust He is Omnipotent...in control of all and Almighty; Omnipresent... everywhere and no one can hide from Him; Omniscient... all knowing, knows it all! Stillness falls. Come and see the works of the Lord... He makes... He breaks... He burns...!

Your heart fills with joy when reading the end of Psalm 46...

"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress

On your knees, you thank God for what He is doing through this Unexpected Storm. Your heart is still before Him. You trust His provisions. His control. His Works. And above all, His love for you. As you stare at the picture above you are struck with a fresh thought...

Just as you see the sun peaking through the clouds in the midst of the thunder storm, so the Son of God shines His light in the middle of your Unexpected Storm.

You are overcome with tenderness as you are still and know that He is God!

When experiencing Unexpected Storms remember to run to Psalm 46. Surrender it all to Jesus, God is in the middle with you, He is shining His light throught the clouds to bring warmth and illuminate His love. Surrender it all to Him. Print this picture out as a reminder or place it as your screen saver.

The Balancing Act... Praise Him!

"Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, Measured heaven with a span and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighted the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?

Isaiah 40:12

No way!

It doesn't make sense.

How does she balance the basket on her head and then walk like she is in a race?

These thoughts plunged through my mind while strolling the streets of Antigua, Guatemala. Everywhere I turned another Balancing Act was on display.

This image continued to reappear for days after returning home from our mission trip. So, in the comfort of my home I decided to try my own Balancing Act. I retrieved a decorative basket from the top of my kitchen cabinet. Honestly, I don't think this basket had been touched in ten years. Anyway, it was just the right size for my head... or though I thought. Feeling confident, I gracefully put the basket on top of my head and released my hands. It wobbled a bit, but then steadied itself. Feeling a little proud, I preceded to take a step when the basket plummeted to the ground. Over and over I tried to balance this basket on my head. All of a sudden, the thought hit me that the basket needed some weight add to it so it would press into my head. So, I filled it with towels which wouldn't cause a mess if they fell. Feeling confident, I pressed forward with my plan. I put the weighted basket on my head, then stretched my arms out for balance, and taking the first step the "Webble-Wobble Affect" took place and need I say more. I still stand with amazement at these women in Antigua.

As I worked through these thoughts and frustrations, God opened my eyes to a spiritual lesson. These women practice this process on a daily basis. They know which basket works best for what they are carrying. They understand the importance of shifting the weight around to achieve perfect balance. And, they cushion it properly upon their heads to allow for bumps along the way.

This is like the Christian life. In order to maintain balance in life we need to practice spending time in the Word every day. God knows which "basket" is needed for your day. By spending time with Him first through prayer, praise, and reading His Word He will then fill your basket with what you need as you walk through the day. Then as we walk He gives us the padding or protection we need as we encounter the bumps through the day. Then you can experience perfect "The Balancing Act."

Here is my dilemma... I begin the day with my "spiritual basket" weighted properly, but throughout the day I add things to the basket like worry, fear, frustration, anger and more. This creates not only a shift in the weight, but a heaviness. I need to be aware of all the things that I casually put in the basket.

Challenge for the Week... Allow God to fill your basket each morning with what He wants in it. Not more, not less. Walk through your day knowing He is protecting you from the jolts in your day. Practice this daily. Enjoying The Balancing Act.

The Super-Hero Syndrome... Praise Him!

I apologize for the lag time in writing a new Carla's Corner post. Between the mission trip to Guatemala, teaching Reflecting Him with live lectures, Reflecting Him Kickoff's and children starting back to school I haven't had time to write. Hmm, sounds like The Super-Hero Syndrome to me...

"In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." Prov 3:6

I can handle it.

I've done it before, I can do it again.

No thank you, I have it under control.

Have these thoughts ever crossed your mind? Better yet, can you remember them rolling off your tongue? We live in the era of super heroes like Wonder Woman. In fact, when my kids were younger they called me Mighty Mom. It's funny, as they got older this title faded into the darkness. As women we tend to think we handle it all: husband, children, laundry, grocery store, cooking three meals a day, church, Bible study, job, ball games, community events, and more.

I remember a time in life when I adorned myself with the Wonder Woman and Mighty Mom wardrobe. Not only did I think I could do it all, I trained myself to believe I was supposed to do it all! Let me set the scene... married 10 years, 4 young children, stay at home mom, home schooling for a season, house in order, laundry folded and put away, 3 boys in baseball on 3 different teams, daughter in gymnastics, teaching a Bible study, and are you ready for this AWANA Commander. Yes, I played the role of a super hero well or so people thought. Every time I walked out of my house, I put on the Wonder Woman-Mighty Mom mask. Oh yes, I wore it with pride. You see, I could get things done or so I thought. In my mind, I was doing it for the Lord. But, in reality my "doing" became my idol. What I accomplished became the pursuit rather than seeking the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. As a result, the Lord allowed me to experience the darkest time in life... depression.

Are you trying to do it all? Before you walk out of your house do you put on the Wonder Woman-Mighty Mom mask? Can you feel the mask becoming a permanent part of your daily wardrobe? Oh, the Lord doesn't call us to do it all, but to keep focused on Him. Let Him set your daily path. Follow Jesus on a daily basis. You see in my 20's and 30's I suffered from The Super-Hero Syndrome. I actually thought God needed me to do all these things for Him. He didn't need me. His desire was my heart of love for Him. Out of that would flow His direction and commitments for the day.

Meditate on our focus verse... "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." Prov 3:6. What is God saying to you? Listen intently. Call upon His name. Wait in expectation. How Sweet the sound of His voice!

What is this growing in the flowerbed?

I pulled weeds for hours a few days ago and now look... another one emerges its ugly head.

These thoughts crossed my mind earlier this summer. Due to the heavy amount of rain in June we experienced a double portion of weed population. So, on a regular basis I armed myself with my gardening gloves, old shoes, sun screen and determination to tackle these unwanted plants.

One day as I raged war in the front flowerbed, I noticed a wild plant that looked different from the others. Its broad leaves and rich color caused me to halt my warfare actions. After careful examination and a "google search" I realized somehow a watermelon plant had taken root right next to the front entrance of our house. In amazement, I immediately shared it with my daughter, Carly. She begged and pleaded with me to not pull the plant. So, giving into her excitement I halted the weed battle. I must be honest, I just knew this watermelon vine would be fruitless in the end. I mean, we didn't plant the seed in the first place and we were leaving on vacation for 2 weeks.

I will take care of it when we get back. I am sure Carly will forget about it while on vacation.

To my amazement, after arriving back home from our two week trip the vine had tripled in size! And, wouldn't you know a baby watermelon protruded from the vine as if it to say, "Thank you for allowing me to grow in your front yard!" I have to say my heart pounded with excitement as I showed Carly the fruit production. Oh, the joy of her enthusiasm blessed me beyond words. Then she said, "Thank you for not pulling it." As you can see from the picture, the watermelon vine stretches nearly the whole length of the flowerbed and the flourishing vine is filled with fruit.

It's interesting how God teaches life lessons through real life experiences. I have no idea how the watermelon seed embedded itself by the front door. Possibly someone spit out a seed while eating some watermelon. Through time it was covered by dirt and soaked with water. When the time was perfect the seed germinated and roots began to form. Then the plant appear on the surface, gaining strength as it grew... and then the fruit!

You never know what "believer's seeds" you are "spitting" out of your mouth. I mean when you live a life sold out to Jesus... you breathe Him in and can't help but talk about Him when you walk, talk, serve others and live your life. You don't always know what seed is planted or who will nourish that seed with enriched solid soil from the Word of God or who is spiritually soaking the seed with prayer. Spiritual roots must develop before the growth is visually seen. In time as the spiritual vine is strengthened, fruit begins to develop. Oh, God has spiritual lessons ready and ripe for the picking everyday!
